Installing Matomo on a server
Matomo is not available as a one-click app in the Hostpoint Control Panel. This means that you need to install the tool manually on your web hosting or Webshop server. With a single Matomo installation, you can monitor multiple websites. For more information, see this Matomo article.
The following requirements must be met for the installation:
- You must have access to the server via FTP or SSH. The upload via FTP is described below. Alternatively, you can upload the required files via the Explorer in the Hostpoint Control Panel.
- When using FTP: your computer must have an FTP client installed. We recommend FileZilla (Windows, Mac, Linux) or Cyberduck (Mac).
To install Matomo, follow these steps:
- Download Matomo On-Premise via this link: https://matomo.org/download/
- Extract the ZIP file.
- Log in to the Hostpoint Control Panel with your Hostpoint ID.
- Open your web hosting.
- Decide whether you want to install Matomo in a subdomain or in a subdirectory of your website:
- Subdomain: create a new website under a suitable subdomain (e.g. analytics.your-own-domain.ch) under “Websites” > “Create a website”.
- Subdirectory: Create a new subdirectory in the document root (root directory) of your website under “Explorer” > “Create directory” (e.g.: your-own-domain.ch/analytics).
- Subdomain: create a new website under a suitable subdomain (e.g. analytics.your-own-domain.ch) under “Websites” > “Create a website”.
- Launch your FTP client and connect to the server.
- Make sure that the transfer type is set to “binary”.
- Upload all files in the folder “matomo” to the directory of the created subdomain or the created subdirectory (in this case, “analytics”) of your website.
→ The upload may take a few minutes due to the quantity of data. - Open your browser and go to the URL where you installed Matomo (e.g. analytics.your-own-domain.ch or your-own-domain.ch/analytics).
→ The following page is displayed:Info: Note: If the page is not displayed correctly, please check whether an ad blocker is enabled in your browser and disable it. - Now follow the Matomo instructions to get the tool up and running.
Info: Note: Make sure that your Matomo installation and the websites you want to integrate Matomo into run the same PHP version.
→ Matomo is installed and is now ready to use.
