DNS stands for Domain Name System and is used to resolve domain names into IP addresses.
People are familiar with domain names such as ‘hostpoint.ch’. Computers, on the other hand, only understand IP addresses, which they use to communicate with other computers on the network.
Because people can remember letters more easily than numbers, a system is required to convert ‘hostpoint.ch’ into ‘217.26.48.170’. This allows a computer to find the appropriate server, which can then take the user to the ‘hostpoint.ch’ website.
