What are sender policies?
Sender policies can be defined per domain to increase e-mail security.
These set out the circumstances under which Hostpoint’s mail servers send e-mails on behalf of the respective domain. The policies also determine if e-mails are signed with DKIM.
A distinction is made between the normal sending of e-mails via outgoing mail servers using an e-mail program (e.g. Outlook, Apple Mail) and the sending of e-mails via Hostpoint’s web servers. The latter situation particularly arises when sending automated e-mails via your website (e.g. order confirmations or contact forms).
What sender policies are available?
You can choose between the following policies:
E-mails sent via an e-mail program
Policy | Meaning |
---|---|
E-mails can only be sent with the respective e-mail user Recommended setting |
To send e-mails with a specific sender address in your domain, you must log in to Hostpoint’s outgoing mail servers using exactly the same e-mail address. The sent e-mails are signed with DKIM. This setting offers the best protection against misuse of your sender within the Hostpoint infrastructure as well as within your domain. Example: You have set up the e-mail address your.name@your-own-domain.ch in your e-mail program (e.g. Outlook). E-mails with this sender address can only be sent via Hostpoint’s mail servers if you log in to Hostpoint’s outgoing mail servers using your.name@your-own-domain.ch. |
E-mails can be sent with any user of the domain |
To send e-mails with a specific sender address in your domain, you can log in to Hostpoint’s outgoing mail servers using any sender address in that domain. The sent e-mails are signed with DKIM. This setting protects you from misuse by owners of other domains within the Hostpoint infrastructure. Example: You have set up the e-mail address info@your-own-domain.ch in your e-mail program (e.g. Outlook). To send e-mails with this sender address, you can log in to the outgoing mail server using any e-mail address in this domain (e.g. sales@your-own-domain.ch). |
No restrictions Not recommended |
There are no restrictions. E-mails with sender addresses in this domain can be sent using any valid Hostpoint e-mail user. However, the e-mails are then only signed with DKIM if the sender domain matches the domain of the logged-in user. This means that the domain is not particularly secure within Hostpoint’s e-mail infrastructure. Example: The e-mail user your.name@your-own-domain.ch can send e-mails using the sender addresses info@example-company.ch and info@my-own-company.ch. |
E-mails cannot be sent with this domain |
It is not possible to send e-mails via Hostpoint’s mail servers with this sender domain. |
E-mails sent via web server
Policy | Meaning |
---|---|
E-mails can only be sent with the web hosting to which the domain is assigned Recommended setting |
E-mails with sender addresses in your domain can only be sent for the web hosting account to which this domain is assigned. The e-mails are signed with DKIM. Example: The domains your-own-domain.ch and preferreddomain.ch are assigned to your web hosting. The web servers will only allow e-mails with these sender domains from your web hosting. |
No restrictions Not recommended |
All Hostpoint web hosting accounts can send e-mails with this sender domain. However, the e-mails are then only signed with DKIM if the sender domain is assigned to the sending web hosting. This means that the domain is not particularly secure within Hostpoint’s e-mail infrastructure. Example: The domain your-own-domain.ch is assigned to your web hosting. Other web hostings can also send e-mails with this sender domain. |
E-mails cannot be sent with this domain |
It is not possible to send e-mails via Hostpoint’s web servers with this sender domain. Only select this option if you are sure that your website does not send any e-mails (no contact forms, no order confirmations etc.). |
