Step-by-step: E-Mail configuration for Thunderbird 3.x and newer

Thunderbird is a very powerful and easy-to-use open source E-Mail client.
It is available for Windows, Mac OS and various Unix-based systems. The E-Mail client developed by the Mozilla project supports POP and IMAP and offers many features that make your day-to-day E-Mail activities a pleasant experience.

Downloading Thunderbird

Mozilla Thunderbird can be downloaded from https://www.thunderbird.net free of charge and in various languages for Windows, Mac OS and Unix.

Start the account setup wizard

Go to the File menu and select New -> Existing Mail Account to start the setup wizard.
Now enter your name (display name). This is the name recipients will see when they receive an E-Mail from you. Next, enter the full E-Mail address and the corresponding password. Then click Continue.

Automatic configuration

Go to the «File» menu and select «New» > «Account» to start the setup wizard.
Now enter your name (display name). This is the name recipients will see when they receive an E-Mail from you. Next, enter the full E-Mail address and the corresponding password. Then click «Continue».
Thunderbird automatically detects the correct server settings. Please note, however, that these details are not always correct. You should therefore always check to make sure the selected settings match the details we provide.

Manual configuration

Go to the «File» menu and select «New» > «Account» to start the setup wizard.
Now enter your name (display name). This is the name recipients will see when they receive an E-Mail from you. Next, enter the full E-Mail address and the corresponding password. Then click «Continue» and select «Manual setup».

Choosing the account type: POP3 or IMAP

Now choose between a POP3 or IMAP account.

Using IMAP saves your E-Mails on the server. Each time you read an E-Mail, a copy is downloaded from the server.

Using POP3 downloads and saves your E-Mails to your Thunderbird. The messages are then deleted from the server. This way, you can also read your E-Mails offline at any time, for example if you are on the train.

If you are not certain choose IMAP.

IMAP configuration

If you would like to use IMAP to retrieve your E-Mails, select IMAP at the top of the dialog box. Enter imap.mail.hostpoint.ch for your incoming mail server.

In the SSL field, select STARTTLS. The port is automatically changed to 143.

POP3 configuration

If you would like to use POP to retrieve your E-Mails, select POP at the top of the dialog box. Enter pop.mail.hostpoint.ch for the incoming mail server.

In the SSL field, select STARTTLS. The port is automatically changed to 110.

Outgoing Mailserver

Enter asmtp.mail.hostpoint.ch for the outgoing mail server.

In the SSL field, select «STARTTLS». The port is automatically changed to 587.

Enter your full E-Mail address again.

Finish

Then click «Re-test». Once everything is correct, you can complete the account setup process by clicking «Done».
